Understand
the estimate.
Supported business scenario.
This tool assumes an effective S election, one eligible 100% owner who actively works in the business, one employer, ordinary operating profit and a reasonable W-2 salary. Other business expenses are already deducted. Payroll benefits, FUTA, state unemployment and payroll administration are excluded; account for them separately. It is not a test of S-election eligibility or a salary recommendation.
Method.
Employer and employee Social Security are each 6.2% of salary up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% each with no wage cap. Additional Medicare of 0.9% applies to owner wages above the filing-status threshold and is employee-only. Pass-through profit equals entered profit minus salary minus employer FICA. Salary plus pass-through profit, less the basic standard deduction, enters the regular individual brackets. Employer FICA is a business expense; the combined result includes it once alongside employee taxes and owner income tax. The result excludes income-tax withholding as a separate expense because withholding is a prepayment of that same income tax.
Profit is not the same as distributions.
Ordinary pass-through profit is generally taxed to the owner even if retained in the company. Pure pass-through profit is not subject to self-employment tax in this model. Distribution basis, built-in gains, passive income and loss limits require separate review. If salary plus employer FICA exceeds profit, this tool stops rather than assuming a deductible loss.
Illustrative example.
At $150,000 profit before salary/FICA and a separately justified $60,000 salary, employer FICA is $4,590 and pass-through profit is $85,410. A single filer’s modeled regular income tax is $23,632.40; combined owner/business components total $32,812.40 before QBI and other exclusions. The example salary is not advice.
Supported personal-tax scenario.
The 1099 and S-corp estimates assume a U.S. resident adult under 65, not blind or claimed as a dependent, using the basic standard deduction and with no other household income, wages or self-employment. For a joint return, the spouse has no income. For married filing separately, the spouse does not itemize. These restrictions matter: outside wages change Social Security calculations and other income changes tax brackets. Do not use this model for an unsupported household.
Important exclusions.
Personal calculations exclude qualified business income (QBI) deductions, all credits, itemized deductions, retirement and health-insurance deductions, senior deductions, tips/overtime deductions, investment income, AMT, NIIT, foreign income, state/local taxes and other special rules. QBI may materially reduce income tax if eligible; excluded taxes can also increase liability. Results are component estimates, not your complete tax bill or refund. Payments, withholding, prior-year safe harbors and uneven payment periods are not modeled.
